Custom Environmental Monitoring & Data Acquisition Platform

Challenge

A client required centralized monitoring of environmental conditions throughout multiple properties, including traditional HVAC zones as well as temperature-sensitive spaces such as a wine cellar and art gallery.

Commercial monitoring solutions either lacked the required flexibility, required multiple independent applications, or depended upon subscription-based cloud services. The client sought a unified platform capable of consolidating monitoring, historical data, and alerting into a single interface.

A secondary objective was the ability to integrate multiple residences—including a beach house—into the same monitoring environment while maintaining a consistent user experience.

Solution

KSH designed and developed a custom printed circuit board (PCB) and monitoring platform capable of collecting data from distributed analog and digital sensors throughout the properties.

The system communicates through an MQTT-based architecture, allowing sensor data to be securely collected, stored, and presented through a custom-developed dashboard. The platform was engineered to support future expansion, enabling additional sensors, monitoring zones, and properties to be incorporated without significant infrastructure changes.

By combining custom electronics, software development, networking, and database technologies, KSH delivered a purpose-built solution tailored to the client’s operational requirements.

Capabilities

  • Analog and digital sensor integration
  • Multi-zone environmental monitoring
  • Multi-property monitoring and management
  • Temperature and humidity tracking
  • Wine cellar and specialty-space monitoring
  • Historical data logging and trend analysis
  • Alerting and notification capabilities
  • MQTT-based communications infrastructure
  • Custom dashboard development
  • Local or cloud-hosted deployment options

Results

The completed system provides a true “single pane of glass” view of environmental conditions across multiple properties and critical spaces. The client can monitor temperatures, humidity levels, and system status from a centralized dashboard while maintaining access to historical performance data and automated alerts.

This project demonstrates KSH’s ability to engineer custom solutions that extend beyond commercially available products. By integrating custom electronics, software, networking, and data systems, KSH delivered a scalable monitoring platform designed specifically for the client’s needs rather than forcing the client to adapt to the limitations of off-the-shelf solutions.
